General Information on BABLE

1. What is BABLE

BABLE is a community driving the Smart City movement. Our members come from cities and companies striving towards creating smarter cities. We use this platform to share our experiences and ideas while helping each other develop new ones. Our platform is a spin-off from the Fraunhofer Society. We work with researchers and experts in the Smart City field to bring together neutral and quality information to support implementation of Smart City Solutions.

2. How does the platform work?

The BABLE platform consists of three main sections: SPOT, EXPLORE and CREATE. Each of the three sections has specific roles.

  • SPOT: The section where you go to connect and collaborate with the community.
  • EXPLORE: The section where you go to learn about Smart City Solutions and how to implement them.
  • CREATE: The section where you go when you need help with implementing Solutions.

Additionally, when you are logged in, we have the MY BABLE Section through which you can edit your personal profile, company/city profile, and share Use Cases, posts and products.

3. What is in EXPLORE?

The explore section of BABLE is like a library which helps you gain in depth understanding of Smart City Solutions, learn from the experiences of others and discover the current trends and products in the market.
Here you will find:

  • Expert curated information needed to understand and implement Smart City Solutions.
  • Use Cases explaining the experiences of other cities and companies who have implemented Smart City Solutions
  • Innovative products designed for cities, which can be integrated to tackle a variety of urban challenges.

Additionally, when you are logged in, we have the MY BABLE Section through which you can edit your personal profile, company/city profile, and share Use Cases, posts and products.

4. Why visit SPOT section?

The SPOT section helps you to connect with and stay up dated with the needs and offers of the Smart City community.
By frequently visiting the section, you can:

  • Stay-up-to date with tenders focussed in the Smart Cities area
  • Read about the needs and offers of the other community members on the POSTs page
  • React to calls for collaboration.
  • Find the new cities, companies and community members to network

Additionally, when you are logged in, we have the MY BABLE Section through which you can edit your personal profile, company/city profile, and share Use Cases, posts and products.

5. I work at a municipality. How can BABLE help me?

As a city representative, on BABLE you can receive support to tackle your urban challenges, get inspired from the smart city projects of other cities, localize global Smart City Solutions with the help of our expert community, promote your local eco-system, and much more

6. My company makes products for the Cities. How can BABLE help me?

As a company representative catering to city needs, through BABLE you can stay tuned with public tenders and needs of cities, get in touch with the right people working at municipalities, expand your market, join forces with other companies by creating consortiums to build the future cities and much more

7. Why should I register on BABLE?

Registering on BABLE enables you to promote yourself, your city/company, in the smart city community. It enables you to collaborate directly with drivers of smart city movement. We are looking for active contributors. If you see yourself as one, please register yourself and help us build smarter cities together. All information on BABLE is openly available, except for the contact details of the community members. Therefore, you need to register only to contribute actively on our platform.

8. Why should I keep my profile updated on BABLE?

Keeping an updated profile helps you make the most from BABLE. With a growing community, the platform is used by public and private entities to find new collaboration opportunities, share success stories and lessons learned. Updating your profile by adding your photo, contact details and organizational information helps enhance your visibility and chances of collaboration.

9. Why should I create a profile for Company/City?

Some of the main features of BABLE include the possibility to share your success stories (Use Cases), ideas, collaboration opportunities, products, and so on. This is only possible when you are linked to a company or city profile. Additionally, creating a profile enables to promote the work being done by your company/city and make the most of the BABLE community.

10. Why post offers/needs on BABLE?

The posts on BABLE are intended to collaborate, ideate and discuss issues related to Smart City topics. As a community member, you can reply to posts by commenting on it.

As a City representative, you could add posts to

  • get expert opinions on your projects
  • find partners for a living lab>
  • find companies and cities to collaborate with/ form consortiums with
  • Co-design projects with the community by sharing your problems or suggesting solutions to others
  • Invite community members to events and webinars

As a Company representative, you could add posts to

11. Why add Use Cases on BABLE?

Use Cases are implementation stories and facts from cities and companies. They help you learn from others mistakes and challenges so that you have a smoother path towards realising your project. However, being part of a community is a two-way street. Through sharing your experiences with the Community members, you help them avoid the challenges you faced during the implementation. By adding Use Cases, you also promote the achievements of your city/company to a targeted Smart Cities focussed audience.

12. Why upload products on BABLE?

One of the important assets on BABLE are the neutral solutions curated with experts in the Smart Cities Community. Each Solution explains in detail the main functions needed to implement a Smart City Solution. When a product is uploaded on BABLE, it is linked to the relevant Solutions. For example, if your company supplies smart lamp posts to a city, the uploaded product will be visible on the Smart Lighting Solution in BABLE. Hence, any person browsing the website, when looking for a Smart Lighting Solution will know about your product and its features. The product can also be linked to Use Cases where it has been used making it easier for people to reach it. Hence, uploading a product on BABLE makes the product visible to a much-targeted audience who is interested in the Solution. Additionally, as the platform is open, the audience is not restricted to the registered members of the community.

13. Why upload services on BABLE?

As mentioned for products in Question seven, services uploaded on BABLE are linked to the related Solutions and Use Cases. Hence, the service is visible to a much-targeted audience interested in procuring or learning about related Solutions. As the platform is open, the audience is not restricted to the registered members of the community.

How to?

1. How to register on BABLE?

Registering on BABLE is simple and quick. You go to the Sign-Up page, enter some basic information like: First Name, Last Name, E-Mail ID (preferably work E-Mail ID as it is a professional community) and agree to the terms and conditions. Following this, you receive a confirmation E-Mail on the registered E-Mail ID. Once you confirm your E-Mail ID, you are all set.

2. How to create/edit your Personal Profile?

Once you register, when you login for the first time you can directly create your personal profile. Your personal profile helps other community members to know about your work and get in touch with you. Here, you can add your photo, Institution and the role you play there. This is also, where you can link yourself to your company/city profile if it already exists or create a new city/company profile. Additional contact details like phone number help people get in touch with you faster but are optional. This information is only available to the BABLE Community members when they are logged in. You can reach the edit Personal Profile page from My BABLE or the footer at the bottom at any time once you are logged-in.

3. How to create/edit your City/Company Profile?

If your city/company does not already have a profile on BABLE, it is important that you create one and be the contact person. You can go to the create Company/City page also from MY BABLE. Every member of the City/Company has rights to edit the page once they are linked to the page. Therefore, you have full control over the information displayed on the company/city page. Additionally, new members need to be approved by existing members to join the page.

4. How to add an offer/need on the SPOT page?

All posts on the SPOT section can be created from your city/company profile, which you find in the MY BABLE section. You need to be linked to a City/ Company when you want to share something on the SPOT page. The posts have an advanced text editor, which enables you to be creative and add more details to your post like pictures, links, and so on. Companies are not allowed to promote products via the SPOT page unless you have already uploaded the product on BABLE.

5. How to add a new product?

You can add Products if you are linked to a Company profile by going to the MY BABLE section. Adding products on BABLE is not free and has an annual listing fees based on the kind of product you offer. These are explained in detail in the Listing Fees section. You can choose the product category while uploading it, which decided the price you need to pay.

6. How to add a new service?

You can add Services if you are linked to a Company profile by going to the MY BABLE section. Adding services on BABLE is not free and has an annual listing fees based on the kind of service you offer. These are explained in detail in the Listing Fees section. You can choose the service category while uploading it, which decides the price you need to pay.

7. How to add a new Use Case?

Adding a Use Case on BABLE is free and can be done you are linked to a company or city profile through the MY BABLE Section. Adding a Use Case is a five-stage process and needs around 30 minutes. It is ideal for someone who played an active role in the project implementation to fill in the Use Case template. If you need any help with adding Use Cases, you can always write to us at info@bable-smartcities.eu. We would gladly take you through the entire process on a video call for your first Use Case. Once you are done adding a Use Case and send it for review, we check the Use Cases to ensure it abides by the quality standards of BABLE and then display it for public.

8. How to edit an existing Use Case?

The Use Case uploaded by you can be edited anytime from your personal profile. The process is same as when you uploaded the Use Case.

9. How to show a Use Case on your company profile?

Once you have uploaded a Use Case, you can link it to your company/city by going to ‘Edit my Company/City Profile’ and selecting the Use cases where your company played a role. The Use Case then appears on the company/city page.

10. How to add a new colleague to the company/city profile?

When anyone applies for joining your company/city, an existing colleague needs to approve the request. Once it has been approved, the colleague has the same rights to edit the page.

What if?

1. My product does not appear on the right solutions

Products are linked to Solutions by the BABLE Team to ensure the quality of information displayed. If you have problems with the appearance of solutions please write an E-Mail to solutions@bable-smartcities.eu with the link to the product page and name of the solution and particular function in which you want it to be displayed.

2. My Use Case is not publically visible yet

Once a Use Case is complete, the BABLE Team checks it for quality. This might take upto a week. If the Use Case is not displayed within a week, please write to usecases@bable-smartcities.eu with the name of the Use Case. We try our best to make the public at the earliest possible, but if take longer do not hesitate to remind us.

3. There is no Solution applicable to my product/service.

The BABLE SOLUTIONS are developed after an in-depth research on the topic and collaboration with many experts. We prioritize solutions based on the trends in the smart city market. If an applicable solution is not yet available, please write to us at solutions@bable-smartcities.eu. If you have implemented the solution already, you could collaborate with us in developing the Solution.

4. Our Logo does not upload right on the organization page.

All images on BABLE: including profile pictures, company/city logos and background photos look the best in specific sizes, which are mentioned when you upload an image. Kindly check if the uploaded image is of the recommended size.
